Therapy Dog Training
Therapy dog training is uniquely designed such that the trainer must not be the same person that administers the test. Depending on the organization that you choose there may be a few differences in the actual test. Anticipating these differences this training is structured to account for variations in all stages of the test as well as addressing real life instances that may occur during therapy work.
Following are the stages of training we will be going through:
-
STAGE ONE: Obedience: Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Watch me, Leave it and more.
-
STAGE TWO: Public areas such as Lowe's and Backwoods where we can learn to handle elevators, stairs, and people without stressing out impaired or sick patients.
-
STAGE THREE: Care facilities where we work with kids, the elderly, or sick and the various challenges they present such as walkers, wheelchairs, and clinical environment. Kids and Elderly care facilities with the sick, walkers, wheelchairs and more. Keep in mind the various challenges current and future health crisis impact on our ability to be physically present in these facilities.
We do not move through training stages faster then the dog can handle them. There are some dogs that love the work and there are others that need the time to make sure this work is what they wanted to do. A benefit of approaching training this way is that you grow to understand your dog's strengths and weaknesses.
